While the fun may begin where the road ends, you still need a bike that'll get you there—one bike that shreds singletrack and crushes through road miles with equal expertise. Sure, some have tried to make their 'cross bikes more "road-capable" (whatever that means), and others have made their road bikes more "adventure-ready," but we created one bike that makes no compromises between the two. The S-Works Diverge redefines the possibilities for adventure on a drop-bar-bike. The S-Works Diverge frame will comfortably fit up to 700x42mm tires with plenty of room for mud, too. Weight was a large factor in the development, so Specialized took some design cues from the Roubaix with a sub 900-gram FACT 11r carbon frame that's one of the lightest in the category. Actually, it's pretty damn light, even if your intent was more Polka Dot Jersey than hunter's plaid flannel. Specialized opted for a new Open Road Geometry. We know what you're thinking, "it's just another marketing term," but they truly did develop an entirely new geometry. Think of it as a road version of modern trail bike geometry. It provides playful handling and predictable steering for endless dirt skids and mid-corner drifts. The geo features a bottom bracket that's over a half-centimeter lower than the previous Diverge, a slacked-out head tube angle, short chainstays, and a short wheelbase. These changes make for a bike that's not only fun in the dirt, but also performs well on the road. There's only so much that wider tires with lower pressures can absorb, so Specialized implemented a new version of the Future Shock into the Diverge design. It not only soaks up bumps with ease, but provides extremely predictable handling. That's because the wheelbase isn't lengthening when you hit a bump, so the front end of the Diverge keeps the same effective head tube angle. In other words, when you dive hard into a turn, you won't be surprised by under steer or sloppy handling. Unlike the original Future Shock, the Diverge's version features a progressive spring that makes this technology more suitable for off-road applications, where stiffer suspension is often needed to soak-up larger bumps and obstacles. Specialized topped it off with three water bottle mounts, mounts for racks and fenders, and their Road SWAT kit that fits a tube, CO2, CO2 head, valve extender, and money clip. So while it's one of the most smile-inducing bikes you'll ever ride, it's equally adept at commuting or even bikepacking. For the S-Works Diverge, they handpicked the spec for the lightest, most unique build on an adventure bike. They left the shifting and braking up to Shimano, but did so in a non-traditional way. Pinarello road bikes are often anything but normal. See one going down the road, and it’s easy to figure out if a bike is a Pinarello based off it’s Onda design language, especially with the 2019 Pinarello Dyodo Force Disk pedal-assist road bike. What’s not as easy to see is that this is a pedal-assist road bike that offers the very latest in technology. E-road bikes are no longer hulking systems, but the Dyodo e-road bike is simply a Pinarello with a touch more support during the ride. Pinarello claims that the demands are the same as a classic road cyclist: lightness, rigidity, and speed are key to a proper-feeling road bike. They achieve this through slick use of the Ebikemotion X35 drive motor. This uses a hub-based motor that offers 40 Nm torque and 250 W power, and offers drag-free operation above the 20 mph assist limit. Assist levels are controlled by what the iWoc ONE controller, a single LED-backlit button which is embedded in the top tube. From here, riders can select between three levels of assist, and see where their battery life is mid-ride. Need more information? Ebikemotion offers a companion app that not only offers battery life and power output, but GPS navigation and auto-uploading to Strava. Need more battery life? Pinarello will offer a 250 Wh battery pack mountable on the downtube and seattube. Accompanying the stealthy motor is a 250 Wh battery that offers strong performance despite it’s diminutive size (Orbea doesn’t make any claims, but many riders say that the battery gets 60+ miles of range with juice to spare). This keeps weight low (the whole pedal assist system weighs in at 7.7 lbs), and combined with geometry that mimics that of the Pinarello Prince road bike, makes for a bike that surprises in how natural it feels. The hub-based drive motor is drag-free when not offering a helping hand, but when they do offer a helping hand, assist is sneaky and well-disguised. Generally speaking, it’s not until you look at how fast you climbed the mountain that you see that there was a bit of motor-doping going on; it’s that good. Seat tube angle, top tube measurements, and fork measurements, and wheelbase is the same as the Prince Disk. The difference comes in a 10% taller headtube, which ensures the Dyodo maintains the snappy handling of a Pinarello with bit of comfort mixed in. If you're looking for a traditional trail bike, you've come to the wrong place. Pack your stuff, say your goodbyes, and get out. But if you're on the hunt for the perfect shred sled—you know, a "trail bike" that you can take down DH trails, huck off blind drops, or plow through the rowdiest of rock gardens—you'll find yourself right at home on the Stumpjumper EVO Pro 27.5. Who exactly is "EVO" for? EVO is for the shredders—the gnarliest trail riders who live for gravity riding. Big drops, huge kickers, rocks, roots—whatever you throw at it, the Stumpjumper EVO can handle it. EVO uses the same style-specific sizing that's featured on our Demo. This sizing lets you choose the bike that fits the way you ride—not just by the seat tube measurement, like with most bikes—and it narrows things down to two sizes, S2 and S3. These are longer, lower, slacker, and have seat tube and head tube heights that allow you to choose the size that best suits your style and terrain. We started the construction by creating our own mountain-specific stiffness test, and then we looked at the layout with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to see where we could get the biggest stiffness improvements. This led to a big discovery: The Large and X-Large frames needed more front-end stiffness while the Smalls and Mediums were just fine. We were able to create a frame design that was 20% more efficient. And in the end, this proved to be one of the lightest trail frames on the market, today. When designing the frame with the stiffness targets being a main goal, we developed a radical new sidearm design. The front-end and rear-end are connected at three points, and the sidearm helps keep all these points super stiff and connected, all while taking about 100 grams out of the rear-end. More explicitly, this minimizes frame flex when the rear suspension is active. We continued down the suspension path with a custom Rx Trail Tune at the rear shock. Suspension performance is highly dependent on frame, wheel, and rider size, so we use our Rx Tune to get each bike to land in the middle of the adjustment spectrum, and this gives you the biggest possible range to fine-tune your ride. Another focal point of the tune was matching the suspension characteristics between wheel sizes—we developed a specific Rx Tune for each platform. This way, you'll get perfectly linear suspension. Steps were also taken to make this bike easy to live with. Threaded bottom brackets make a triumphant return, and we made room for up to a 3.0-inch tire. You're also free to run whatever aftermarket rear shock you want, since we're using standard metric shocks. We revamped the SWAT box, too, making it sleeker, lighter, and with more volume. And customization is furthered with a Flip Chip that lets you to dial-in your Stumpy to your riding style. Switch it from High to Low and it drops your bottom bracket 6mm and slackens the head tube by half-a-degree. Little details also jump out to surprise you, like a newly designed ribbed chainstay protector that makes chain slap a thing of the past and nearly silences the drivetrain. Lastly, we seriously couldn't make cable routing any easier on carbon models. Full tubes can be found throughout the carbon frame, so all you have to do is push the cable and it'll come out the other end. No more lazy loop, hidden stashes of magnets, pokey spokes, or pillows to cry in. Pinarello never rests on its laurels. It’s a secret to their success and the why to the F10. The F8 that won the 2016 Tour de France and some 90 pro races is a great bike, but Pinarello knew they could do better. They started with the F8, crossed it with their Bolide time trial machine, went to the wind tunnel for road-specific shaping, used computer design to maximize carbon-ply placement, and the result is impressive. The F10 is the fruit of the ‘same, but better’ approach Pinarello has been using. They knew the F8 geometry was dialed, so they could leave that. Pinarello takes pride in their balanced ride, and see that as a defining characteristic of their frames. They knew they wanted the frame to be lighter, stiffer, and more aero. So they analyzed the layup to figure out how to get more lateral stiffness with less material, and they analyzed the aerodynamics to figure out how to cut through the wind faster. And they had to reconcile the two so that the aero shaping helped improve stiffness while reducing weight. With aerodynamics, they decided to focus on practical matters. Namely, making sure the bike was more aero with two bottles sitting in the main triangle. Improving the airflow around the bottles was the most important key to reducing drag. You’ll notice that the fork crown still nestles in a notch between the down and head tubes. And if you take a look at the fork tips, you’ll see extended material behind the tips. These are “fork flaps” in Pinarello jargon, and they smooth out airflow on the trailing edge of the tips. Below the fork, the downtube dramatically changes shape just where the top of the downtube bottle rests. The new shape shields not only the downtube bottle, but the seat tube bottle if it’s run on the lower mounting point (there are three bosses in the seat tube, use the lower two for this aero advantage). The result of the shaping work is that the area around the bottles is 12.6% more aerodynamic. Less dramatic but still important is the shaping around the head tube and the underside of the top tube. These are designed to smooth flow as well. Pinarello is also known for their asymmetric designs. For them, that means slightly off-setting and re-shaping frame tubes so the frame is better able to resist torsional forces created by pedaling. The results are subtle enough not to see in pictures, but are obvious to the eye in person. The downtube is offset to the right, while the seat tube offset to the right, and even the stays are moved in that direction as well. Visually, the asymmetry of the seat stay yoke is surprising, but elegantly subtle. Weight is one of those features that at the pro level is vital, yet limited as a result of minimum weight standards. The F10 is 55g lighter than the F8 in the 53 size. A drop of 6.29%. When Team Sky takes these bikes on the road, they need to add weight. You can take advantage of it, and should. Aero bikes often lack lateral stiffness. The shaping often places material in the wrong places to maximize the rigidity in this plane. Pinarello actually made the F10 stiffer than the F9. The tapered 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer increases lateral stiffness at the fork. The improved shaping and new asymmetries increase lateral stiffness at the bottom bracket. The result is 7% stiffer overall. Pinarello keeps the frame aero by running cables, housing, wiring internally. If you run Shimano’s latest Di2, your E-Link can be accessible through a port in the downtube above the bottle-no need for a mount under your stem. All the necessary stops and plugs are included. The battery, if you go electronic with Di2 or Campagnolo EPS, goes in the seatpost. The included aero seatpost itself is 350mm long, with a 25mm setback. The clamp can work with oval or round rails-make sure to heed the torque rating marked on the post. The post is secured to the frame as aerodynamically as possible, with two bolts behind the seat tube, called Twin Force Closure. The frameset comes with headset, top cap and spacers. There are round and aero options. In both cases, there’s a 15mm top cap, two 10mm spacers, and one 5mm spacers. The aero option is designed to work with Pinarello’s MoST stem and/or integrated bar/stem combo. The bottom bracket keeps to Pinarello’s preference, Italian-threaded. Maximum tire width is 25mm. The Pinarello F10 is excessive in the ways a WorldTour bike should be, more of everything needed, less of everything not essential.

Pinarello's Dogma F10 proves time and time again that it comes from good stock. It's proven itself in the biggest one-day classics and in the Grand Tours, most recently at the Giro. The F10 manages to balance ride quality, weight, and aesthetics way better than most and maximizes performance while minimizing tradeoffs. About the only thing we reckon would take it over the top is the inclusion of disc brakes. It's certainly not mandatory for road riding, but, the power, modulation, and performance in wet weather all point the advantage towards discs and with the Dogma F10 Disk Road Frameset we feel like we get to have our cake and eat it too…but not too much, we still have hills to climb! On the surface, it might appear that Pinarello simply adapted disc brake mounts to the existing F10 frame. This couldn't be further from the truth, since adding the mounts and reinforcing those areas would negatively affect the ride quality and take on a weight penalty. Pinarello has experience transforming their previous superbike, the F8, from rim to disc, so the exercise wasn't too foreign to them. The F10 was already one of—if not the—favorite all-around road bike here at Competitive Cyclist, and the addition of disc brakes takes it over the top. Pinarello, already experts in asymmetric carbon layup design in drivetrain applications now are able to showcase this technique into handling disc braking loads. This results in creating areas of the frame that are durable and completely apt at handling the disc brake stresses that they'll see without overbuilding the entire frame, adding unnecessary weight, or making the ride overly harsh. Though the frame is significantly redesigned, Pinarello continues the use of an Italian threaded bottom bracket shell, which is easier to install, maintain, and keep creak-free than the PressFit standard. The Onda fork is also redesigned to meet the demands of disc brakes. Thru-axles are used to secure the wheel to the dropouts, increasing the stiffness and allowing for out-of-the-saddle climbing efforts and sprinting with nary a brake rub. Pinarello adds fork flaps, essentially mini fairings, to the trailing edge of the dropouts to further increase stiffness and enhance the aerodynamics. A 12mm thru-axle is also used out back to secure the rear wheel. Like the standard F10, this bike has clearance for tires up to 25mm. This is, after all, a road racing bike, and 25mm tires offer the best balance of aero efficiency and rolling resistance. This isn't as much clearance as other disc brake drop bar bikes on the market, and many might be disappointed by the lack of space for tires, but an F10 did win Strade in 2017 piloted by Sky's Kwiatkowski on Continental Competition 25mm tubular rolling stock. We doubt the majority of you looking at this frameset have ambitions to build this into your gravel grinding rig, but the bike does have some gravel riding in its pedigree. The beautifully balanced geometry from the F10 carries over, and it has proven itself capable enough to carry riders comfortably into the third week of a stage race yet so confident on the descents that you feel like cornering hard enough to blister a tire. The directive from Team Sky was simple: 'the same, but faster.' That was the spark that led to the Pinarello Dogma F8. The Dogma 65.1, the bike that won just about all there was to win in 2013, wasn't good enough for them. As a team, the most fearsom Grand Tour squad on the planet, they look for gains wherever they can be found, and hope that if they improve everything, even if it's just a little bit here and there, it will add up to real, race-winning differences. 'Same, but faster' could be confounding to a company that prides itself on making bikes for the best in the world and an incredible success record over the years. But Pinarello embraced the challenge. Sky sweetened the pot by enlisting their sponsor Jaguar Land Rover, which provides not only cars to the team but wind-tunnel expertise. Pinarello decided to keep the 65.1's geometry, which has been proven over the years, and is the foundation for a great ride. Everything else was on the table. Jaguar helped design the tube shapes, finding what worked, and what worked better. Just about every frame tube was tweaked in some fashion. The fork legs splay out a bit wider for better aerodynamics. The fork crown helps smooth the airflow around the front brake. The head tube has a more pronounced nose, though still within the UCI's 3:1 ratio. The top tube was flattened. The down tube and seat tube and seat post were changed to what Pinarello is calling a "flatback profile." It's a truncated airfoil that tricks the wind into thinking the tube is longer than it is. The seat stay attaches to the seat tube at a lower point, and the monostay top is shaped to shroud the rear brake. The seat post clamp was integrated into the frame and the fixing mechanism hidden from the wind. Even the enormously popular Onda wavy stays and fork have been refined to simpler, more aero curves. Bottle cage placement was even investigated. The result is 3Xair bolts on the seat tube. There are cage bolts. Use the middle and lower for better aerodynamics and better weight positioning. Use the upper and middle if you want to reach the bottle easier. The shaping wasn't the only change. The shapes have a second purpose; increasing rigidity to improve pedaling efficiency. In many cases, the new shapes meant less material and structures better able to resist torsional forces. The carbon lay-up had been modified as well. Highlighting the changes is Pinarello's use of Torayca's T1100 1K carbon, which helps reduce weight and increase stiffness further. The improvements continue beyond the realm of the theoretical to the practical. Knowing that some riders utilizing electronic shifting like to slam their stems, the top of the head tube has been re shaped to better accommodate electronic junction boxes. The Think2 mechanical/electronic internal routing has been kept, with smoother refinement of the ports, including an exit port on the right rear dropout. If the bike is set up for electronics, the battery hides from the wind in the seat post. The front derailleur hanger is removable. This is both in case it gets damaged and for people looking to lighten their ride as much as possible if they're setting up for a demanding hill climb. After all these improvements, the question should be, "is it faster?" The answer is a resounding "yes." The frameset is 120g lighter in the 54cm size. It measures 12% stiffer overall, with 47% less aerodynamic impact. The fork works as a sail in certain wind conditions. The frame and fork together have 47% less drag than the previous Dogma, and come close to Pinarello's Bolide time trial frame. It's also 16% more balanced. Balanced. Remember Pinarello's embrace of asymmetry? It is still present, but more refined. As a result, the asymmetries they build in better counteract the pedaling forces on the frame. And out on the road, the bike provides a more lively ride. As with earlier Dogma's, the F8 comes with a tapered 1-1/8" to 1-1/2" steerer. The bottom bracket is Italian-threaded. The included seat post is 300mm long and is secured via two 2.5mm Allen-head bolts behind the frame. It can be packed with Shimano's Di2 internal battery, Campagnolo's EPS V2 battery, or left empty. The dropouts are carbon-fiber for light weight.
